What is scaling and root planing?
Scaling and root planing (SRP) is the first line of defense for managing moderate to advanced gum disease. This deep cleaning procedure involves two steps designed to halt the progression of periodontal disease.
- Scaling: This step involves thoroughly removing plaque and tartar from the deep pockets at the gumline. We use specialized skills and tools to remove unwanted debris from areas that your toothbrush can’t reach.
- Root planing: After scaling, the dentist polishes the root surfaces of your teeth to prevent further bacterial colonization. This step also encourages your gums to reattach to the teeth, promoting healing.
The goal of SRP is to reduce bacterial load in the mouth and halt the progression of gum disease. The procedure is typically administered under local anesthesia to maximize your comfort. Depending on the severity of your infection, you may require more than one visit, each focusing on a different section of your mouth.
